Posted on January 19th, 2008 by dchase

As 2008’s magazines, books, and guides become available, I’ll continue to add them to this list. Am I missing something? Let me know in the comments.

I’d highly recommend reading the commentary at the bottom of the page. There’s on going discussion about release dates and alternative purchase sources.

It’s pretty bad when you miss your favorite prospect book on your own websites resource list.

Ya know what sucks? For whatever reason, the Chicago area chain bookstores only seem to carry a handful of fantasy mags. And Amazon doesn’t offer them. Does anyone know of a good online source for them that doesn’t kill you on the S&H?

creativesports.com put one together before. The Lawr Michaels group. Actually it has been my favorite the last few years.

    Also, ESPN’s Fantasy Issue
    Sports Weekly’s Fantasy Issue, and
Krauss’s Fantasy Sport Magazine (see the NFBC site for sample)

There are no Street & Smith guides anymore, since the company that owns Street & Smith purchased The Sporting News and only wants to put out one set of annuals. I’m not yet sure what the mix of content will be - whether it will just be the same as previous Sporting News annuals or whether the folks who used to do the Street & Smith annuals will contribute some material

The two annuals I’ve seen out are the Lindy’s 2008 Fantasy Fantasy mag and the Fantasy Baseball Guide Professional 2008

Steve - A few of the sites offer their annual for retail price with no additional postage. Rotowire does that at http://www.rotowire.com/magazine/index.htm and Fantasy Baseball Index does it at https://store.fantasyindex.com/

There are a few web sites that sell single issues of magazines that might sell some of the annuals without unreasonable postage charges: There’s http://www.mymagstore.com/, http://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=372142011 ,and http://www.booksamillion.com/ncom/mag
I don’t see any annuals available at any of these 3 sites yet, however.

Plus, if you want digital copies of the baseball annuals, which of course come free of postage, you might want to look at http://www.newsstand.com/ (for Sports Weekly’s special editions) and http://zino.com/ (for the Sporting News and Rotowire’s annuals)

DChase - Zach is talking about Fantasy Sports Magazine, which is at http://www.fantasysportsmag.com/ - They publish 4 issues a year and you can buy a subscription for $9.97 a year at the site.

If USA Today Sports Weekly does the same thing they did the last two years, they’ll publish the The Sports Weekly Fantasy Baseball Guide ‘08 the last weekend of February and price it at $4.95. Unlike regular Sports Weeklys, the special editions have a slink cover. (Strangely, I’ve noticed very cheap subscriptions to Sports Weekly - note that the subs do not include the special issues - for $9.95 a year plus $2.95 postage over at http://www.overstock.com/Books-Movies-Music-Games/Sports-Weekly/518213/product.html - that’s way cheaper than I’ve seen anywhere in years.)

As far as I know, the ESPN Fantasy Baseball Preview is featured in one of their regular issues. It’s real cheap to subscribe - for example, you can get a 2 year subscription (52 issues) for under $9 total at bestdealmagazines.com… though it may be too late to subscribe now and get this year’s fantasy baseball issue. Subscribing for 2 years costs less in this case than buying 2 issues off the newsstand

Thanks, Greg. I don’t rely on guides during the draft (though BP and Shandler come with me), but they’re better train and bathroom reads than my spreadsheets!

It seems Fanball.com has gotten back into the business with their Guide to Winning Fantasy Baseball. They’ve been doing football regularly, but haven’t made a baseball mag in several years.

    I’ve added Fanball.

    thx

I am trying to figure out if Rototimes will be releasing a mag this year since they merged with fanball. Fanball’s mag is already out.

They answered my question at rototimes
“The Fanball magazine is the Roto Times magazine. We will only be producing one magazine.

    Thank you,

    Customer Support”

Turns out the Creativesports.com one is the Fantasy Baseball Guide pro edition, as heavy contributors. Your link is dead, here is one I found. http://www.rotorob.com/baseball/the-fantasy-baseball-guide-2008-edition/

The Fantasy Sports Mag. link was provided above…. did not see it added to your list.

  17. comment number 17 by: dchase

Zack, I made the change thanks for the link.

btw: this isn’t my list. I don’t even buy mags. This is a “community” list.

    thanks for your help.

Why did John Benson stop writing his Baseball Annual? Thanks

  19. comment number 19 by: Peter Kreutzer

The Fantasy Baseball Guide 2008 has been published for nine years out of New York City. Creativesports.com has run the mock draft for the mag for many years now, for which I am very appreciative, especially since Lawr has collected an always interesting group to draft. In November.

Other Creativesports.com writers have contributed much to the baseball and football editions over the years. But I’m the editor of both, which are published by RFP LLC, which also publishes Bridal Guide.

There is a lot to be said about the fantasy annual magazine business and I’m happy to answer anyone’s questions about how we put together The Guide.

    Please let me know.

I’ll probably add a mini review to this resource next season.
